FAQ

PACK 565 Frequently Asked Questions
Welcome! We hope this answers your initial questions. Please return the attached contact information sheet and we can send you more information.

The “Main Question” – Why Scouts?

A. The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetime. Cub Scouts is the first step towards becoming a Boy Scout.

B. Cub Scouts is for both you and your boy. Cub Scouts is open to all boys, and parental involvement is critical to the enjoyment of your boy in Cub Scouts. Also, your involvement is an important component in the operation and running of the organization.

C. Being a Cub Scout is FUN!

1. Just what is “Scouts” and who is it for? Do I have to live in Menlo Park or go to Laurel to join Pack 565?

Cub Scouts (a subset of Boy Scouts) is for boys entering first through fifth grade.
Pack 565 is open to all boys – you do not have to attend Laurel or live in Menlo Park.

2. I have never done any “Scouting” before. I’m overwhelmed. Where do I start?

In summary, you:

1. Turn in the last page of this packet with your contact information and your son’s information.
2. Come to a Den or Pack meeting and meet the Den your boy would join.
3. Submit an application for your boy and pay his dues.
4. Collect your “kit” from the Den (all uniform patches needed, neckerchief, neckerchief slide, handbook, and hat).
5. Start coming to Den and Pack meetings.

3. When do we need to start coming to Den and Pack meetings?

The Cub Scout “year” matches the school year – we start in August, right before school starts.

The first Pack event of the school year is the August picnic – at that time you can submit an application, pay the dues, and sign up for a volunteer position.

There are three activities during the summer, one each month, and all current and potential scouts are welcome to attend. If you are interested in the summer activities, be sure to give your name and e-mail address to one of the Pack leaders.

4. When do the Cub Scouts meet?

The Pack (the larger group) meets once a month, for roughly an hour, at the Laurel Multi. The day of this meeting was the 3rd Wednesday of the month this last year. That may change next school year.
The Den (the smaller group) meets separately once a month, for roughly an hour, usually at Laurel or Encinal. The day of this meeting will be determined by the Den Leaders, but will usually be a consistent day of the month (i.e. 1st Tuesday, 2nd Wednesday, etc.).

5. Am I expected to be involved?

Yes. Scouting is for your boy, but it takes effort on your part to make it a good experience.

6. My boy did not start as a Tiger – is that an issue?

New scouts join at all levels. The only thing that would be different is that he would be required to earn a “Bobcat” badge during his first month. He would, at the same time, be working with the rest of his Den on whatever rank they are all working towards.

7. How do we find out about upcoming dates for meetings, activities, etc.?

All information is given out at the Den and Pack meetings. You can also provide an e-mail to the Pack and receive any Pack or Den information sent via e-mail.

8. Where do we buy uniforms?

The Pack provides all uniform patches needed, neckerchief, neckerchief slide, handbook, and hat. The Scout provides his uniform shirt, pants, belt and socks. Uniforms and other Scout items can be purchased locally at the Palo Alto “Service Center” (a.k.a. the “Scout Store”), located at the Lucie Stern Community Center in Palo Alto: 1305 Middlefield Rd #2, Palo Alto, CA 94301, phone: (650) 327-5900.

9. Is there a Calendar for the year?

A Pack calendar will be available closer to the start of the Scout year in August.
